Exercise Through Dance
Tuesday and Friday 9:30 – 11:30
Instructor: JoAnn McColloch
This popular class has been led by instructor JoAnn McColloch for 20 years and it’s still going strong. According to JoAnn, a retired school teacher, the class is good not only for your body but also your brain, as participants learn a new dance each month. And once a year the dancers put on a holiday show.
The first hour of class is usually line dancing, country style. Then in the second hour things really get going with circle dancing to international folk tunes. JoAnn prepares all of the music in advance and it is quite a varied assortment.
Even though the pace is far from frenzied, some participants do work up a sweat. “It’s good exercise — it improves your balance and it’s good for your heart,” says JoAnn.
Between songs participants relax and gather in small clusters, socializing. “They talk as much as they dance,” says JoAnn, “and that’s great. It’s really friendly and fun.”
There are usually around 50 seniors in the class, most of them women. But JoAnn stresses the class is open to all: “Everyone’s welcome!”
So why not give it a whirl?
