A Tribute to our Honored Board Member and Friend Harry Vickman

IN MEMORIAM Harry Vickman 1917 – 2009   On Sunday, November 22, 2009, ONEgeneration was notified of the death of a dear friend and Board member, Harry Vickman. Harry Vickman has been with ONEgeneration as a Board Member for more than seventeen years and guided the development and success of the ever-popular Encino Farmers Market. As a Los Angeles native, Mr. Vickman was born into a local legacy. For years Vickman’s Restaurant and Bakery was a downtown institution. Harry joined the family business after completing his B.S. degree in Business Administration at UCLA. From 1942 to 1945 he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a mess officer and was later discharged as Captain. After the war, Harry took over the operation of Vickman’s Restaurant and continued its success until retiring and selling the business in 1986. During his restaurant career Harry served on the Board of Directors of California Restaurant Association for more than 16 years and was a Director Emeritus of  CRA. While working in downtown Los Angeles, Harry was a director of the local development corporation, involved with job creation initiatives and active in a whole list of civic improvement organizations. Harry has also been affiliated with the Board of Directors of Skid Row Development Corporation, and Volunteer Guardian ad litem with the Child Advocates Office, an adjunct of the Childrens Court.   Harry, and his wife of 69 years, Babs have three children, Larry, Nancy and Janet and Harry and Babs raise orchids and dwarf conifers.
